Saving lives. One defibrillator at a time.
Join Start a Heart Southend in our mission to maintain and replace life-saving defibrillators throughout Southend, ensuring every community has access to the tools they need to survive.
Our initial aim is to ensure that the 12 defibrillators installed by the Rotary Clubs of Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay, together with the Carli Lansley Foundation, continue to be available 24/7 to help save lives. We’re looking for your participation as we need more volunteers to help.

Who we are
Our Mission:
- Start a Heart Southend is committed to increasing survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest in Southend and the surrounding areas.
- Every minute without CPR or a defibrillator significantly reduces the chances of survival.
- We believe awareness and access can save lives.
- Awareness + Access = Lives Saved
How We Do It:
We focus on the maintenance, registration, and replacement of life-saving defibrillators in public areas, ensuring they are ready for use when needed most.
Our work doesn’t stop there — we also help educate the public on CPR and defibrillator use.
What We Need:
- Volunteers to help raise awareness, assist with fundraising, and spread the word about defibrillator locations.
- Donations to keep our life-saving equipment well-maintained, updated, and accessible.
- Support from local businesses and community groups to sponsor replacement defibrillators, promote training sessions, and increase CPR awareness.
Why This Matters
Sudden cardiac arrest can strike anyone, anytime, anywhere. It’s a medical emergency where every second counts. When a person collapses, having a defibrillator nearby and trained people ready to help can make the difference between life and death.
By focusing on both the equipment and education, we aim to empower our community with the knowledge and tools to act fast when needed.
Our Work
We maintain and manage a network of defibrillators originally installed by the Rotary Clubs of Leigh and Thorpe Bay and the Carli Lansley Foundation. Our goal is to ensure these life-saving devices are always operational, accessible, and known to the public.
- Maintain Defibrillators: Regular checks and updates to ensure all devices are ready to use.
- Raise Awareness: Educate the public on the importance of CPR and knowing where the nearest defib is located.
- Fundraising: We rely on donations to keep this important work going. Your support can help us maintain and replace outdated or damaged equipment.
